Remember fruit roll-ups from your childhood? The tasty snack is simply blended fruit baked at a low temperature, and you can make them at home!
I’d forgotten all about roll-ups, until my niece found a DIY recipe online. My sister offered me a strip of her strawberry and honey concoction, which taste just like the store bought version, sans food coloring and corn syrup.
Rather than mixing fruit plus sugar, I made my first batch with fruit and chia, per this recipe from the Super Healthy Kids blog. It’s for kids, and kids at heart!
This was my roll-up recipe of choice because there’s no added sugar, and chia seeds are filling and loaded with nutrition. And the kid in me likes how squishy chia seeds get when soaked.
Nutiva’s superfood chia seeds are certified organic and Non-GMO. And they’re called a superfood for a reason.
If you pour your fruit leather batter on parchment paper instead of a silicone mat, remember to take off the wrap before eating it. When my sister offered me a roll-up strip (my first in probably two decades) I was so excited I came close to eating the wrapper and all!
Making fruit leather is a great way to use up strawberries (or any other fruit) in your garden at the end of the season, or when there’s a deal on fruit at the grocery store. Choose organic when possible!
